How to Use Compass & Surface Level
Turn any smartphone, tablet, or laptop into a precision navigational heading instrument and spirit level.
Enable Device Motion Sensors
Click Enable Device Sensors. On mobile Safari / iOS, tap Allow to grant gyroscope and magnetometer orientation access.
Hold Flat for Azimuth Heading
Hold your device horizontally flat to read true azimuth bearings (0° North, 90° East, 180° South, 270° West) and lock target courses.
Measure Surface Incline & Level
Lay your device edge along a shelf, table, or solar panel to read pitch and roll angles. Press Zero 0° Level for relative measurements.

Compass & Inclinometer FAQs
Common questions regarding device orientation permissions, pitch, roll, and spirit level calibration.
Why does iOS Safari ask for permission to use motion sensors?↓
Apple requires explicit user authorization via a button click before a website can access accelerometer and gyroscope hardware on iPhone and iPad. Clicking Enable Device Sensors triggers this prompt safely.
What is the difference between Azimuth, Pitch, and Roll?↓
Azimuth (Heading) is the horizontal compass bearing from 0° (North) to 360°. Pitch is the front-to-back incline tilt angle of the device. Roll is the side-to-side rotation angle used for horizontal spirit level alignment.
Can I use this on a desktop PC or laptop without motion sensors?↓
Yes. On desktop computers without physical accelerometers, an interactive Heading Slider and quick cardinal buttons (N, E, S, W) allow you to simulate any navigational bearing effortlessly.
What does the Zero 0° Level button do?↓
The Zero 0° Level button tares the current surface angle to 0.0°. This allows you to measure relative angles between two sloping surfaces, such as checking whether a shelf is parallel to a sloping floor.
